Osteoporosis Knowledge, Self-Efficacy, Health Belief and Perceived Health Status

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: This study is a descriptive survey of Middle-aged and Elderly Women for determining their Osteoporosis Knowledge, Self-Efficacy, Health Belief and Perceived Health Status.
Methods: The study participants were 361 women aged 35 years or older who visited a health center in Seoul for a total of 5 years from April 2008 to September 2012.
Results: Knowledge of osteoporosis is 12.54 points, and the self-efficacy of osteoporosis is 42.38 points. The total score for osteoporosis health belief is 126.82 points and the perceived health status score is 9.11 points. The lowest age(35-44) group show higher scores of Self-Efficacy and Benefits of Exercise than other age groups. In contrast, the perceived health status showed that the age group was higher than the age group of 45-54 and 55-64. The higher education year group, the higher the knowledge of osteoporosis and self-efficacy levels. The artificial menopause group scored high in self-effective, sensitive, and calcium eating disorders. Knowledge of osteoporosis was shown to be beneficial of exercise (p=.009), beneficial of intake of calcium (p=.019), and disabilities of exercise (p=022), among parameters of osteoporosis health beliefs. The self-effective effects of osteoporosis had a significant correlation with each of the seven parameters of osteoporosis health (p=.001), and the perceived health status of the underlying health condition.
Conclusion: If an education program for preventing osteoporosis in middle-aged and elderly women is planned, an analysis of the knowledge, health beliefs and self-effects of osteoporosis should be preceded. They should also consider reducing awareness and calcium intake of exercise barriers.
